News Release: Minimal disruptions reported on April 20

The University of Colorado Police Department reports that minimal disruptions happened on campus on April 20, 2012. In recent years, thousands of people have lined the Norlin Quad area for several hours on this day. This year, Chancellor Phil DiStefano ordered the closure of the Main Campus to visitors from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. He also ordered the main lawn areas of Norlin Quad closed to everyone during this time.

At approximately 1:20 p.m., three CU-Boulder students crossed police tape (Labeled: Police Line – Do Not Cross) and sat on the lawn area of Norlin Quad. Officers approached these men and reminded them of the closure. They were given opportunities to leave the lawn area, but refused to do so or show their identification. They were arrested without incident and taken to Boulder County Jail. One other person ran onto the lawn area later in the afternoon and received a summons for trespassing.

Shortly after 4 p.m., a group of protesters marched from the University Hill area into campus. A group of approximately 300 gathered on a lawn area near the Duane Physics and Astrophysics Building. Approximately 400 people watched from the perimeter of the lawn area. The gathering lasted no more than 30 minutes. The group left without incident.

This year’s April 20 operations required a large presence of police officers. The University also did extensive messaging starting April 13 about the campus closure. It appears the vast majority who would normally come to an April 20 event on this campus complied with the Chancellor’s order.

“We thank the public for their cooperation,” said Joe Roy, University Police Chief. “We also thank the law enforcement agencies that assisted UCPD to make this operation a success.”
